Stepping Out

Stepping Out is a program that offers services to provide support, information, & advocacy to women who are, or have been, active in the sex trade; and provide access to support services that encourage successful lifestyle changes.

Vision Statement:

To provide a safe and inclusive environment for marginalized women who’s lives are impacted due to involvement with prostitution.

Why do we need Stepping Out in Nanaimo?

Nanaimo is at a minimum for services for homeless or street entrenched women. We offer services from a harm reduction model, without judgment or pressure.

Harm Reduction

We define harm reduction as a range of non-judgmental strategies and approaches for providing services, supports and information to individuals, their families, and communities which encourage people to be safer and healthier.

Stepping Out provides harm reduction services within a framework which acknowledges that the realities of poverty, class, racism, social isolation, past trauma, gender-based discrimination and other social inequalities affect both people's vulnerability to and capacity for effectively dealing with drug-related harm.

Where is it held?
Monday drop-in, 1-3 pm, at 285 Selby Street.

Sustainable Living Urban Garden

The Women's Centre has established a beautiful 6 bed garden in the back yard of the centre. The garden is an idyllic space for women to gather and share stories. It is used to grow organic food that is used in the centre and women are welcome to work in the garden on Tuesday afternoons from 1pm-3pm and pick the fruits of their labour.

The purpose of the garden is to achieve a holistic approach to our outdoor environment. The three main goals are Sustainability, Empowerment, and Food.

• Sustainable spaces means women of the Centre will be able to grow food for their families, using techniques and principles which maintain healthy non-harmful spaces.
• Empowering the community of women to produce: to use the space given to them and the fruits of their labour, teaching and experiencing the wellness that comes of the connection to production.
• Food issues have come to the forefront at the centre. We believe that access to healthy food is a basic human right. As such, we are proposing an intense involvement with food production for women and their families.
